In the matter of Cardiac disorders, perhaps there is no other term, so grossly misunderstood and so widely misused even by illiterates and interested media, as CHOLESTEROL, with the phobia of impending coronary or arterial blockades and death by thrombosis. The media has taken advantage of such phobia, to exaggerate the claims of advertisers of edible-oils, drugs .etc., with abundant application of medical terminologies as LDL, HDL and such other scientific terms to their business advantage, misleading and misguiding the gullible public.

 

Cholesterol is an essential starting material for synthesis of several essential components and products for the body functions.

 

Chemically, Cholesterol belongs to the family of chemicals known as steroids, a constituent of i) sex hormones like oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone, ii) bile acids needed for digestion and absorption of fats, iii) stress hormones such as cortisones, iv) pro-vitamin D essential for fixation of Calcium in the body, and v) cell-wall structures to maintain cell-wall strength, particularly of red blood cells.

 

Structurally, Cholesterol has organic configurations similar to Cortisones or testosterones, the latter synthesised from Cholesterol by body systems in the liver.

 

Cholesterol is present in all animal fats, but not in fats or oil of vegetable origins. Accumulation of Cholesterol in the arterial walls has been attributed to cause athero-sclerosis, followed by obstructions and myocardial infarction or stroke.

 

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition had reported the findings that cholesterol absorbed by the body is in direct proportion to the diet intake. (49-1989-pp.629-635), and hence the universal advice by doctors to reduce intake of such animal fats. Strangely, this report also showed that the increased dietary absorptions caused simultaneous decrease in the biliary excretions and faecal eliminations with sharp fall in the body synthesis of Cholesterol.

 

Since Cholesterol is an essential chemical for the body and is synthesised in the liver to make up for the shortages at intakes, any artificial reduction in Cholesterol levels by dietary control or drugs like Statins, triggers compensatory mechanisms to enhance synthesis, to make up for such deficiencies. Hence, dietary reduction of Cholesterol in the body, by controlled regimen or drugs, would not be the solution to reduce the total cholesterol content in the body, and is a futile exercise.

 

Moreover research has established that lowering of cholesterol, though marginally reduces risks of athero-sclerosis, increases malignancies by 100% offsetting any such claimed benefits. (Lancet-1, 1987,pp.155-156). It is hence advisable not to attempt to reduce Cholesterol levels, restricting the procedure to only cases with extremely high levels.

 

Research has shown that pure Cholesterol or pure Linoleic acid in unsaturated edible oils cannot cause athero-sclerosis or scales/plaques, whereas oxidised products of these fatty acids viz. oxycholesterol and hydroperoxide of linoleic acid are the real dangerous harmful agents. Oxidation takes place inside the body in the absence of anti-oxidants such as Vitamins A, C, E and Beta-Carotene, or on exposure to air, light, heating or on ageing (long storage).......

SATURATED FATS LIKE COCONUT OIL (OMEGA 3) HAS NOW BEEN FOUND TO BE THE BEST COOKING MEDIUM COMPARED TO ALL UNSATURATED FATS, WHICH GETS OXIDISED ON AGEING, EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT AND REPEATED HEATINGS. U.S. HAS BANNED USE OF TRANSFATS IN ALL FAST FOOD OUTLETS.
